A Simple Blueprint for Your Pre-Shot Routine
A pre-shot routine is a simple yet effective way to get into the zone to play your best golf.
When creating your pre-shot routine, it's important to keep it simple. A simple, quick routine that you can perform consistently is much better than a complicated routine that you can't perform consistently.
The basic pre-shot routine we like to see players start with is as follows:
- Quick practice swing with a single swing thought in mind behind the ball
- Pick target
- Visualize shot
- Step up to ball and fire
Start with this framework and iterate based on what you find works best for you out on the course.
Here are some additional tips to optimizing your personal pre-shot routine:
- Utilize an Intermediate Target. Many of the great players including Tiger and Nicklaus have utilized an intermediate target to help them get aligned properly. Give this a try when you are implementing your pre-shot routine.
- Find Your "Triggers". Triggers are the specific movements or actions that signal to your brain that you're about to hit a shot. For example, it could be taking three deep breaths or aligning your feet and hips. Other players find a rhythmic flow of the feet or even a club waggle prior to hitting the ball is a good trigger.
- Practice! The more you practice, the more automatic your routine will become. This is particularly important if you are playing in big tournaments (or just trying to hit the fairway on the 18th hole during a career round.)
- Grade Yourself. Evaluate yourself on how well you are able to stick to your routine at the end of a round.
