3 Quick Tips to Optimizing Angles off the Tee

3 Quick Tips to Optimizing Angles off the Tee

Good scorers learn the most effective route around a golf course.

One of the keys to becoming a good scorer is learning how to take advantage of angles on the golf course. Here are three tips to help you become a better scorer that you can put into play immediately.

1. Account for Your Natural Ball Flight

Give your shot shape the widest possible sweep to get it in the fairway!

If you move the ball left to right (fade / slice pattern for right handed players), you should typically tee the ball up on the right side of the tee box. If you move the ball right to left (draw / hook pattern for right handed players), you should typically tee the ball up on the left side of the tee box.

2. Tee It Up on the Opposite Side of the Tee Box to Where You Want Your Ball to End Up

Playing to the middle of the fairway on every hole is probably not the best strategy. Think before you mash each tee ball. You should be optimizing your angle into each hole and avoiding trouble off the tee.

To optimize your angles, tee the ball up on the opposite side of the tee box to where you want your ball to end up. Hitting down the right side of the fairway? Tee it up on the left side of the tee box. Hitting to the left side of the fairway? Tee it up on the right side of the tee box.

3. On Par 3s, Play the Angle that Gives You the Most Landing Area on the Green

Open up the green by expanding the size of the safe landing area on the putting surface.

Generally, this means you should tee it up on the opposite side of the tee box to where the pin is on the green. For example, if the pin is on the left side of the green, tee it up on the right side of the tee box.
