A good warmup strategy will help you unlock lower scores. Warming up involves preparing your body, your swing and, perhaps most importantly, your mind for the upcoming round.
Here is what you need to know about warming up effectively to help you go low.
Warmup Do's
- Loosen up your muscles.
- Get a feel for green speed.
- Hit 75% and full stock shots.
- Get in the "zone" from a mindset perspective.
- Try to maintain a consistent warmup structure.
Warmup Dont's

- Obsess over your mechanics.
- Freak out when you hit two bad shots in a row.
Suggested Warm Up Approach
Every golfer has a different workout approach that works for them. Unlike the pros, chances are you do not need to warm up for 2+ hours before a round.
If you feel you need a change to your warm up approach, try the following 40 minute warm-up plan out for size.
Putting (10-15 min)
- 10x 3 foot putts
- 10 foot uphill putt
- 10 foot downhill putt
- 10 foot flat putt
- 25 foot uphill putt
- 25 foot downhill putt
- 25 foot flat putt
- 3x long lag putts from downtown
Short Game (5-10 min)
- 3x 20 yard fairway pitches
- 3x 30 yard fairway pitches
- 10 yard chip out of rough
- 15 yard chip out of rough
- 20 yard chip out of rough
- 3x bunker shots
Full Swing (15-25 min)
- 5x 75% Pitching Wedges
- 5x Full Pitching Wedges (aim to specific target that varies with each shot)
- 5x Full 8 Irons (aim to specific target that varies with each shot)
- 3x 75% 8 Irons
- 5x Full 5 Irons (aim to specific target that varies with each shot)
- 3x Fairway Woods (aim to a specific 15 yard fairway)
- 3x Drivers (aim to a specific 15 yard fairway)
- 3x First Tee Shots (hit whatever club you will play off the first tee for that day visualizing the shot you must play on the range)
Feel free to riff on this the next time you are out by adding and subtracting based on your preferences and the amount of time you allot to warming up before the round.
