Getting It Up and Down to Lower Your Scores
Check out this Under Par Performance Golf practice session to help you build confidence in your short game and get the ball up and down more frequently.
Short Game Grind [88 minutes]
Mindset
Progress is about choices.
Progress is deteremined with each and every decision you make.
Will you hit that extra putt on the practice green.
Will you decide to hit the couch just because it is too windy to practice.
Will you do that extra sit-up.
Will you let yourself get out of focus on the course.
The path to progress is through making better decisions daily.
Start now.
Chipping Practice [20 minutes]
3 Sets of the Following:
- 10 Yards - 3 shots (normal, high, low)
- 20 Yards - 3 shots (normal, high, low)
- 30 Yards - 3 shots (normal, high, low)
Tiger, Rory and Jason Day riffing on short game philosophy if you are looking to geek out for 20+ minutes:
Bunker Line Drill [8 minutes]
Draw a line in the sand. Practice taking a bunker swing and making contact with the explosion starting at the line. Here is a video of the drill for reference.
Complete this action 20 times.
Don't overlook this drill at any level of the game. Ensure your splash game is dialed in.
18 Hole Chipping Challenge [25 minutes]
Play 18 holes where you put a ball down in a random lie (bounce it off your club three times and play it as it lies!) and play it out. Make sure you play many random shots. How close can you get to a score of 36?
When you have confidence that you can get the ball up and down from anywhere on the course, it puts less pressure on you to hit GIRs.
(If practice area is crowded, how many of the 18 shots can you get within 5 feet?)
Impossible Shots [8 minutes]
Pick 5 impossible shots to try around the green for fun.
Recommendations:
- Extremely plugged lie in the bunker.
- Ball in a divot.
- Ball of the downslope of a bunker.
- Impossible lie in the rough.
- Flop shot to a tucked pin.
Clock Putting Drill [15 minutes]
Place 3 balls in a line at 2', 3' and 4' away from the hole. Repeat this pattern at 45 degree increments.
How many of the 24 putts can you make?
The goal is to improve your consistency and confidence on short putts. Phil Mickelson is rumored to complete this drill at least once during every one of his practice sessions. He has to make all 24 putts in order to head to the showers!
Speed Practice [12 minutes]
Place a club or flagstick 2' behind the hole and hit 3 putts from 10'. All 3 balls must end up in the hole or between the hole and the 2' marker behind the hole.
Once complete, move back to 20', then 30' and then 40'.
