Practice Session to Help Improve Your Club Head Control

Practice Session to Help Improve Your Club Head Control

Club Head Control Day [61 minutes]

Mindset

"I smile at obstacles."

-Tiger Woods.

What do you do when you have obstacles on the course or in life?

Today is about working on your club control with some fun drills and challenges. It is also a shorter day today. As always, feel free to move it around to meet the needs of your schedule.

Full Swing Warm Up [15 minutes]

Start your day out by working through your typical full swing warm up routine.

Suggested warm up program if you do not have one drilled in at this point:

  • 5 50% Pitching Wedges
  • 5 Full Pitching Wedges - aim to specific target that varies with each shot
  • 5 Full 8 Irons - aim to specific target that varies with each shot
  • 5 Full 5 Irons - aim to specific target that varies with each shot
  • 3 Fairway Woods - aim to a specific 15 yard fairway
  • 3 Drivers - aim to a specific 15 yard fairway
  • 3 First Tee Shots - hit whatever club you will play off the first tee for that day visualizing the shot you must play on the range

Tee Impact Drill [10 minutes]

Let's work on that compression.

Hit 10 shots with an iron placing a tee in the ground about 1/2" in front of your golf ball. Your goal with each swing should be to break the tee with your swing. If you are hitting off a ball, place a tee or ball marker in front of your golf ball and make impact with it each time. (See attached video for a guide on how to do the drill.)

This drill will force your body to swing down and through the golf ball. Remember - little ball, big ball impact order. Your divot should start where the ball was or a little after and move through where the tee was in the ground.

Stinger Action [12 minutes]

Learn how to hit a stinger from the GOAT:

  1. Ball back in your stance.
  2. Feel like you are covering the ball with your dominant shoulder on the downswing.

Stingers are great for your practice routine because they are fun and help you develop great club head control.

Complete the following circuit:

  • 3 5 irons
  • 3 hybrid or driving irons
  • 3 3-woods

Complete this circuit 2 times for a total of 18 shots.

Note, you can *try* this with a driver but even Tiger does not play this shot.

Nine Shot (Iron) [12 minutes]

Hit 9 shots with an iron. The 9 shots must take the following form:

  • Straight (normal, high, low)
  • Fade (normal, high, low)
  • Draw (normal, high, low)

Do this 2 times. See Johnny Miller video as a demo.

What shot do you have the most confidence in today? What shot do we need to work on over time? Record your results in the notes.

Nine Shot (Driver) [12 minutes]

Same as the previous but with a driver. Hit 9 shots. The 9 shots must take the following form:

  • Straight (normal, high, low)
  • Fade (normal, high, low)
  • Draw (normal, high, low)

Do this 2 times.

Again, record your results in the notes.
